A Rug Size Guide

We had a warm fall so far in Atlanta but the temperature seems to lower down this week, winter may be coming so it's a good excuse to talk about rugs, don't you think?

Rugs to me evoke cozying up, warmth of course but it is so much more... The right rug will pull a room together, it will define your space, anchor it. The right rug defines by style and by size, and today we are going to talk about size for the living room rug.

The following are tips, guidelines for rug size but please remember to take into account your room size and the placement of your furniture. In general, larger rooms call for larger rugs to ground them, and smaller rooms call for smaller rugs so the room feels larger.

One of the most common mistake I see in homes is having a rug too small in the living room, so instead of pulling a space together, it chops it off, the space becomes disconnected. Use a rug to connect your seating, to ground it.

Standards sizes for living room rugs are 8'x10', 9'x12', 10'x14'. Following I put together few layout for different rug sizes.

Rug Size Guide - The Living Room

All those exemples follow 2 main rules:

First, make sure to have at least 6" on each side of the sofa.

And secondly, make sure to either place 2 furniture legs on the rug or all the furniture completely on the rug. 2 legs or 4 legs on the rug, that's your choice, either way stay consistent.

Those 2 above rules will go far for you but I will add a few more tips...

Measure your seating area before shopping and get the closest size up from that. Place your furniture as you wish to lay it out in your room and measure! Remember at least 6" on each side of the sofa.

Typically, you'll want to run the rug the length of the sofa, which is usually how the room is oriented but it is not true all the time. For example if you have a Iong and skinny room, you might want to orient your rug horizontally, so you can have 2 areas in one room. It's tricky so if you are not sure, try both ways. See what better work for you.

After reading those quick guidelines, you realized that your favorite rug is too small? Don't worry, I have a solution: Layer up! Yes you read well...Layer up!

Layer your favorite rug with a larger sisal rug underneath. Natural fiber rugs are quite affordable and neutral in colors that you can layer it with your too small favorite rug.

A rug is an important step into your design, it will make or break your space, but follow those tips and it will be ok.
